Early Learning & Children's Courses

Our public Early Learning & Children’s Courses are a great way for kinder and primary school-aged children of all genders to take their first steps into classical dance and experience the magic of dance and music. These term-based courses provide a fun and informative introduction to dance and aim to instil a love of movement. 

Classes are taught by specially trained teachers in the beautiful studios of The Australian Ballet School and feature live piano accompaniment. 

No audition is required to access this public program. It is structured for fostering creativity and enjoyment through dance, and does not centre around ballet grades, formal exams or any performances.

Early Learning course enrolments are based on the child’s current age (3yrs+).

Children’s course enrolments are based on a child's current primary school year level.

Term 2: Saturday 2 May - Saturday 27 June

Term 3: Saturday 18 July - Saturday 19 September

Introduction

Our public Early Learning & Children’s Courses offer a wonderful opportunity for children of all genders, from kindergarten to primary school age, to embark on their first journey into the world of classical dance. These term-based programs introduce children to the joy and beauty of dance and music, fostering a lifelong love of movement.

Taught by highly trained instructors in the stunning studios of The Australian Ballet School, each class is accompanied by live piano music, enhancing the experience and creating an inspiring atmosphere.

There are no auditions required to join this public program. Focused on nurturing creativity and enjoyment, the courses do not follow formal ballet grading, exams, or performances, making them a fun and supportive introduction to dance.

Please note, as outlined in the School's Terms and Conditions, “The School does not provide individual feedback outside of sessions/classes.”

Please note that bookings will be for the term booked. As this is a public program, prior enrolment will not guarantee a place in future courses.

Eligibility Criteria

Early Learning course enrolments are based on the child’s current age (3yrs+).

Children’s course enrolments are based on a child's current (2026) primary school year level.

Any incorrect enrolments may be transferred if a place is still available in the correct class. Incorrect enrolments may be refused and incur the 15% cancellation fee if a refund is approved.

Kinder participants must be toilet trained and must be at least 3 years old at the start of the term.

Please note that bookings will be for the term booked. As this is a public program, prior enrolment will not guarantee a place in future courses.

Where are the classes?

The Australian Ballet School (within The Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre)

Level 5, 2 Kavanagh Street, Southbank VIC 3006

ABS staff members will escort the children into the School's studios. Parents/Carers are not permitted into the studio area.

What should my child wear?

There is no specific uniform, however the students should be dressed in appropriate dancewear.

Girls: leotard*, ballet tights* or white ankle socks, ballet shoes

Boys: plain bike shorts, form-fitting plain t-shirt/singlet, white ankle socks and ballet shoes

* Please ensure this is a leotard and not a body suits. No buttons

* Please ensure these are stockings and not leggings.

Does my child require specific shoes?


Children are required to wear ballet shoes which can be purchased at any specialised dancewear store.

Our preferred supplier is Bloch. The closest store to the school is located at 35 City Rd Southbank.

Are there trial classes available?

We do not offer any trial classes. It can take several weeks for a child to settle into a new environment and so we encourage children to attend for the full term course.

My child has missed a class, can I get a refund?

Bookings for classes are non-refundable unless they are cancelled by The Australian Ballet School.

As our Early Learning and Children's courses consist of a set number of classes per term, no make-up classes are available.

Are there any end of year performances?

As a per term course, our Early Learning & Children's Courses do not offer any annual/end of year performance experience.

On the final Saturday of Terms 2, a small presentation for parents is offered to share a small insight into the studio. In Term 4 a Presentation is offered in addition to the term classes.
