Balanchine's Who Cares?

by The Australian Ballet School |

< Back to Ballet Matters

Victoria Simon, renowned Ballet Mistress for the George Balanchine Trust, has spent much of September in the School’s studios. She has been closely working with our Level 7 & 8 students teaching Who Cares? choreographed George Balanchine © The George Balanchine Trust, in readiness for our Showcase performances.

Balanchine choreographed Who Cares? to 16 songs Gershwin composed between 1924 and 1931, including some of his most iconic and well known numbers;  “Fascinatin’ Rhythm,” “Who Cares?,” and “I Got Rhythm.” Balanchine used the songs not to evoke any particular era but as a way to portray an exuberance that is both broadly American and charged with the distinctive energy of Manhattan.

“It has been a fabulous experience working with the students of The Australian Ballet School. They have taken Who Cares? to heart and are enjoying the wonderful Balanchine choreography with all its jazziness and energy.” Victoria Simon
