From Within marked an inspiring start to the performance year at the Frankston Arts Centre, showcasing the breadth of talent, artistry and dedication of The Australian Ballet School students across a diverse program of classical and contemporary works.
The performance opened with the debut of Défilé, choreographed by Lucinda Dunn OAM and Andrew Murphy and performed by Level 8 students. A beautifully unified work, it set the tone for the evening with precision, discipline and a shared sense of purpose. The piece highlighted both the strength of the cohort and the individual aspirations of each dancer as they prepare for the next stage of their training.
In Le Bal, another debut, Level 7 students embraced the elegance and theatricality of Stephen Baynes’ choreography, further elevated by Hugh Colman’s gorgeous costumes. Through this demanding work, students demonstrated remarkable artistic growth, developing their confidence, musicality and stage presence with each performance.

Bringing a burst of energy and character to the stage, Hutsulski Zabavy, choreographed by Melanie Moravski Dechnicz, showcased the versatility of the Level 6 students. Filled with vibrant movement and personality, the work challenged students to explore storytelling and performance beyond the classical ballet vocabulary. Adding authenticity and cultural richness to the performance, the character costumes were generously sourced from Lehenda Ukrainian Dance Company.

The contemporary work Fight or Flight, choreographed by Lucas Jervies, saw Level 8 students pushed both physically and artistically through dynamic and demanding movement. Requiring strength, commitment and fearless performance quality, the piece offered students an opportunity to explore new movement styles and deepen their artistic expression.

The program concluded with Concerto Anniversary, choreographed by Lucas Jervies, a sweeping and technically demanding work that highlighted the maturity and professionalism of the graduating students. Through intricate partnering and powerful ensemble work, the ballet demonstrated the artistic transformation that takes place throughout a student's training journey.
From Within reflected The Australian Ballet School's commitment to developing well-rounded dancers through meaningful repertoire experiences that build artistry, stagecraft and professional readiness. It was a fitting celebration of the students' achievements and an exciting beginning to the year ahead.
