Project Assemblé!

Project Assemblé! Realising Marilyn Rowe House

The Australian Ballet School gratefully acknowledges the generosity and passion of over 340 donors who supported project assemblé!– our campaign to help build a home away from home for our young dancers - and who have now contributed to the School’s rich and vibrant history.

It was the vision of the School’s former Directors, particularly Marilyn Rowe OBE, for Australia’s national ballet school to have a Student Residence that would ensure that students from the age of 13 onwards would be able to live in a safe and secure environment, and with 24-hour care, once they moved to Melbourne to follow their dreams. Studying ballet full-time places great demands on young dancers’ mind and body, as well as their ability to time manage and maintain healthy nutrition beyond their day-to-day training.

In any given year, over three-quarters of full-time students at The Australian Ballet School, are comprised of students who have relocated from interstate, country and regional Australia, and overseas. It is vital for The Australian Ballet School to be able to provide consistent and professional care, structure and nutrition, to our students.

In 2013, the School came one step closer to realising the vision of Marilyn Rowe OBE, upon securing crucial support from Federal Government and an anonymous donor. The School was able to draw upon its own savings and embark upon the long and arduous search for a suitable site for its new Student Residence.

On Saturday 24 May 2014, the School secured a suitable site for its Student – a Queen Anne residence, located in The Avenue, Parkville, a short 5km tram trip to the School. Lead by the Board of Directors, Project Manager Rowan Pollard, and Root Projects Australia, the redevelopment of the Parkville site was delivered on time and within the campaign’s $8 million budget.

On Saturday 30 January 2016, The Australian Ballet School's new Student Residence Marilyn Rowe House was officially opened by His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia. It was a glorious moment, witnessed by hundreds of staff, students, supporters and friends of The Australian Ballet School.

We are very grateful to each and every individual who has provided financial and in kind support to project assemblé!
