Full-Time Training

The Australian Ballet School offers a well established and internationally recognised Full-Time Programme of vocational dance training. The full-time students enjoy the benefit of working in a focussed and professional environment where the specialised staff guide and assist them in a holistic and dedicated manner.

Students may begin the Full-Time Programme from the age of 13/14 years of age, or when they study year 8 or 9 at high school. Students usually complete the Full-Time Programme by the time they are 20 years of age. During this time, students work towards the achievement of their Victorian Certificate of Education, the Diploma of Dance,  the Advanced Diploma of Dance and the Graduate Diploma of Classical Ballet. Further information on accredited course can be found here.

Students involved in the Full-Time Programme begin their day at 8.30am Monday – Saturday and the day concludes in the late afternoon on weekdays and by midday on Saturdays. There is one male and one female class per level. Full-time Training incorporates both academic / theoretical and dance studies. Further information about the academic components can be found here.

Level 4
Level 4 is currently the first year of full-time training. It is offered alongside academic year 8 or 9 at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS). Students in Level 4 are expected to achieve well in their academic studies as well as consolidate and expand their technical and artistic dance skills.

Level 5 & 6
Levels 5 & 6 comprise the Diploma of Dance. This is a national qualification studied in conjunction with year 10 and year 11 academic studies including allied subjects such as Music, Performance Psychology, Nutrition and Cultural Studies.

Level 7
Students in Level 7 enrol in the Advanced Diploma of Dance, a national qualification combining comprehensive dance training with a strong onsite academic programme. The  course focus is on technical training and artistic development, preparing students for the dance profession. Students  also complete their secondary schooling, gaining the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

Level 8
Level 8 students enrol in the accredited Graduate Diploma of Classical Ballet. This qualification  prepares students for the dance profession at a virtuoso level by refining their dance technique and developing their professional skills through career development activities and performances, including a secondment with The Australian Ballet’s Dancers Company.

The Dancers Company is an integral part of The Australian Ballet, that takes the highest quality productions to regional areas around Australia for approximately six weeks every year. The Company comprises students in Level 8 who meet the artistic and technical standards required by The Australian Ballet. It provides exceptional professional opportunities for talented dancers who are on the threshold of their careers.
